The Risk of Love

It is probably because it has been the subject of my sermons for the past several weeks, but lately I have been thinking a great deal about love. Surely, we could all agree that the heart and essence of the Bible is love, the love God has for His children. After that, I am not sure, if we can agree on anything else about love. Furthermore, I am convinced that, for the most part, the concept we Christians have of love is severely perverted (misrepresented), and it is so primarily because of the message most church leaders teach. For the most part, we have been taught that love is primarily about us, rather than about Him. It is apparent that the church is determined to make Christianity me-centered, rather than Christ-centered, and this is surely true when it come to the subject of love.
Yes, it is true that God loves you and me, as His children, but it is not true that He does so because we are such lovable, irresistible darlings. The fact is this: He loves us so that He can be glorified in our lives. Now, that tells me, among other things, that there is risk in love—always. Well, I probably need to qualify that, as God never takes risks—never, ever! In fact, it is impossible for God to take a risk. Oh, I know what some of you are thinking, but I repeat: It is impossible for God to take a risk! How, pray tell me, can the One who is in control every time and all the time, ever take a risk?
You and I, on the other hand, are never in control (though we think we are!), so we take risks quite often. The prime example is seen when we are attempting to obey Jesus’ directive to “love one another.” Write this down and remember it: When you choose to love another person, you are taking a huge risk—always.
Here is my point for today: If you are unwilling to take the risk involved in loving another person, you will never know love, and that is a fact.
          You think about that—

"This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent" (John 6:29 NASB).
