The following is another quote from John Fischer’s book, “On a Hill Too Far Away,” p. 86: “’Father!’ cried the boy. ‘Abraham!’ cried the heavens. ‘Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ the man replied, the knife shaking in his hand against the clear blue sky. ‘Do not lay your hand on the boy. Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’ And in the thicket they found a ram. There was a ram for Abraham, but where was the ram for God? God’s Son was on a cross. Nailed to it. But there was no ram in the thicket this time. No other provision. This was it. This was the only Son God had, and this was what all the bloody sacrifices were all about. God saw to it that for other fathers there was a substitute. But when His time came, there was none. His Son was the Lamb, the ram caught in the thicket for you and for me. There was no substitute for the substitute.”
Do you ever wonder why we continue to offer sacrifices to God for our sins? Oh, I know most of us do not sacrifice lambs and doves and goats, though we probably would, if the sight of blood wasn’t so offensive. I am not going to spell it out for you, but I do hope you will give this some thought. How many sacrifices have you already made this week? My guess is that most of you respond with “none,” but, well, give it some thought.
The sacrifice of Jesus really was and continues to be ENOUGH!
